Preserve the integrity of your heritage building using Fireshield coatings for up to 60 minutes of fire resistance.
Fireshield’s products are an innovative, environmentally friendly range of coatings designed to enhance the fire resistance of vulnerable structures. The coating systems have no harmful chemicals and are easy to apply, making them the ideal choice to expose heritage features, including timber floors and structural components in historic buildings, without the need to hide these behind linings.
The Gunnery is a three-story State Heritage building on Sydney Harbour in Woolloomooloo built in 1900. Fireshield Steel 1001 was used to fire rate the existing timber floor and roof structure.
Once complete, the Gunnery will be a contemporary art facility with expanded exhibition spaces, increased artist studios, and multi-use spaces for education and digital connectivity. The refurbishment removes layers of non-original, unsympathetic, and redundant building elements to bring the building back to a more original state.
The issue for the architects was to find a solution that would allow them to keep the existing:
Fireshield delivered a specific design solution using our pigmented coatings to protect and reduce the char rate of existing historical structural timber members, providing the fire rating required. The protected timber could then either be left exposed, top-coated in any colour or enclosed behind a suspended ceiling, making it the ultimate versatile solution.
